Nataša Muševič – Dot: Trees
Sound instalation
11th of December 2014 – 18th of January 2015 @ Modern Gallery, Cankarjeva 15, Ljubljana // Exhibition opening on December 11th at 8pm // Opening hours
Trees is an experiment aiming to extend human perceptual faculties. The project's author Nataša Muševič showcases the electrical and acoustic frequencies inherent to trees.
The sonic essence of a tree was captured by recording the frequency response of its acoustic vibrations. When improving sound, sound engineers initially measure the frequency response of a room, which serves as a basis for the said sound correction. The use of such techniques enables them to obtain resonant frequencies, which reflect the specific form of the measured space. As does an empty room, all three-dimensional objects resonate, albeit we rarely contemplate it, since we are used to perceive sound as a wave motion spreading through air. The author has thus recorded the resonant frequencies of the selected tree by documenting its frequency response
As well as an insight into the intrinsic sonic qualities of a growing tree, the project offers a glimpse into its electrical properties, which are not discernible to the human senses. Trees generate weak electrical pulses; the author has amplified, recorded and included them into her sound installation, and therefore materialized the otherwise imperceptible.
Using the experimental methodology of a sound engineer Nataša Muševič offers an original and wider understanding of the natural world and encourages reflection on the limitations of human awareness.
About the author
Nataša Muševič aka Dot is a music producer, singer, song writer, record label manager and a multimedia artist. She moved to London at the age of 19 to study sound engineering and later finished her honours degree in Recording Arts at London's SAE Institute. During her years in London Nataša managed Immigrant Recordings with Subeena which was the first dubstep record label managed by female producers, and later on funded her own record label Read Write Music. Natasha's work in intermedia art extends to collaborative projects such as Magnetic Matrix (with Marko Batista), Sonične Skulpture (with Boštjan Čadež, Marko Batista and Satja Lumbar) and Sonosthesia (with Jernej Marušič a.k.a. Octex). Her interest in multimedia art aims to include continuous research of sonic frequencies which have always been the main focus of Nataša's creations and also part of her first solo intermedia project Intervals from 2013. She is a co-founder of Maker Lab in Poligon Creative Centre in Ljubljana.
