DATE: Tuesday, August 25, 2020 | 2PM-5PM
MENTOR: Nolan Lem
LOCATION: osmo/za, Slovenska 54 (8th floor), 1000 Ljubljana
APPLICATION: delavnica@ljudmila.org.

About the workshop

This workshop is an introduction to human-computer interfaces (HCI) with a special emphasis on integrating kinetic motion with sound. We will look at the history of physical kinetic sound installation and sculpture in contemporary art and explore different strategies for producing and controlling sound using a variety of programmable and DIY techniques.

Using real-world examples taken from the artist’s own work, we’ll explore both practical and conceptual design from conception, prototyping and installation. Other topics include an overview of the basic principles of acoustics, different strategies for composing for sound in space, incorporating mechanical motion and motor control and connecting software paradigms with the physical world.

About the mentor

Nolan Lem is an artist and researcher whose work reflects a broad range of influences and mediums particularly those related to sound and kinetic motion. His work focuses on the dynamics of emergent systems, autonomous machines and the synchronisation of auditory phenomena.

He has premiered his work and research at a number of diverse spaces including the Museum of Modern Art Buenos Aires (MAMBA), Pioneer Works (Brooklyn, US), LHOSTE Art Contemporain (Arles, FR) and the Danish National Museum of Music (Copenhagen, DK). Artist and research residencies include IRCAM, MassMoCA, Cité Internationale des Arts and the Vermont Studio Center. He holds degrees in music, electrical engineering, and received his MFA at Columbia University where he studied at the Computer Music Center (CMC).
