Igor Trupina: The Best Hotel in Europe or How to Deal with the Technological Demands of a Squatted Hotel
Date: Tuesday, November 22, at 6.30PM
Location: Poligon Creative Centre, Tobačna 5, Ljubljana
Where is the best hotel in Europe? How is it there? How does it operate? Igor Trupina from OpenWlan and Poligon’s MakerLab will explain all this and more in a presentation about the City Plaza Hotel that is squatted and provides shelter for about 400 refugees right in the middle of Athens, Greece. He will provide an overview of the situation, explain what he did there, and how you can also get involved and support the project.
The presentation will cover:
- The goals of OpenWlan's & DuhČasa’s trip to Greece;
- The infrastructural demands of the project and technological challenges they face;
- The technologies currently available for refugees and the status of their Internet access;
- How a small team of determined volunteers from The Solidarity Initiative to Economic and Political Refugees manages to run a place that houses over 400 residents;
- The challenges Igor encountered during his mission and the stories of the refugees he met;
- Ways to expand the operation and possibilities for your contribution to a project that is not funded by any external agencies and relies heavily on donations and fundraising.
