Algopolis festival will host the live coding community at this year’s two-day gathering in Ljubljana. Osmo/za invites you to workshops and an exhibition opening, while Cukrarna.bar will open its doors to Friday night’s Algorave with an international lineup of musicians and visual artists. Meet the community that values shared authorship, open-source and free software, the collaboration between different approaches, and a collective atmosphere. Visit Algopolis!

The two-day event will start on Thursday with Anna Carreras's exhibition opening in osmo/za's Studio Grad at 8pm and culminate on Friday evening with an algorave at Cukrarna.bar. On Thursday and Friday we invite young creatives, artists and coders to join us on live coding workshops: Olivia Jack will mentor an AV workshop, and present her newest browser-based tool Fubbles, while Timo Hoogland will host a crash-course in live coding music.

Ljudmila is proud to present the first true algorave in Ljubljana on the 10th anniversary of the algorave movement: join us on the dancefloor and let an international lineup of live coders will take you behind the scenes of their creative process. Friday, 6 May, at 9 pm in Cukrarna.bar. Admission free!

Celebrate with us in the spirit of collaboration and open source!

More about live coding

Live coding does not run by a common notation, and the instruments for it are hidden in the computer’s command lines. As a fairly new art form, it’s also an umbrella term that encompasses a fusion of electronic music, visuals, improvisation and live performance. A live coder composes music or visuals and creates an event in front of your very eyes. You can dance or sit or simply allow yourself to become immersed in it all.

The live coding community values shared authorship, open-source and free software, the collaboration between different approaches and a collective atmosphere.

Past editions

on-the-fly is a project to promote Live Coding practice, a performative technique focused on writing algorithms in real-time so that the one who writes is part of the algorithm. Live coding is mainly used to produce music or images but it extends beyond that. Our objectives are: supporting knowledge exchange between communities, engaging with critical reflections, promoting free and open-source tools and bringing live coding to new audiences. The project, running from 10/2020 to 09/2022 and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, is led by Hangar Barcelona in collaboration with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Creative Coding Utrecht and Ljubljana’s Ljudmila.

Partners: Hangar Barcelona (ES), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (DE), Creative Coding Utrecht (NL), Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory (SI).

Associated Partner of ZKM | Karlsruhe: Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology at Karlsruhe University of Music.
