About the workshop
Olivia Jack's workshop is an introduction to using live drawing as a part of a live-coded program. "Fubbles" (function scribbles) is a hybrid code and graphics editor developed by Olivia during her on-the-fly research residency. Dragging the mouse or a finger in a drawing generates a sequence of X and Y values in time. These values are looped to create a repeating pattern, and assigned to a variable which can be used to control parameters in live coding visuals or music. Multiple scribble functions can be updated live, creating a flexible gestural control interface to a live-coded program.
During the workshop, we will explore methods for using fubbles in combination with browser-based live coding environments, as well as sending MIDI and OSC messages to other music and visual applications.
Participants should bring a laptop, headphones, and a webcam if possible. Some experience with live coding in any language and/or with javascript is helpful but not required.

About the mentor
Olivia Jack is a programmer, artist, and educator who works frequently with open-source software, cartography, live coding, and experimental interfaces. She is the developer of browser-based creative tools including Hydra (live-codable video synthesizer), PIXELSYNTH, and LiveLab (peer-to-peer media router).
She enjoys creating audiovisual instruments, and often collaborates with musicians and dancers to create live performances. She has shared her work internationally, giving talks, workshops, and performances at venues such as Planetario de Bogotá (Colombia), Centro Nacional de las Artes (Mexico City), Hangar (Barcelona), CTM Festival (Berlin), and Oscillation Festival (Belgium), among others. Originally from San Francisco, California, she is currently based in Berlin, Germany.
on-the-fly
on-the-fly is a project to promote Live Coding practice, a performative technique focused on writing algorithms in real-time so that the one who writes is part of the algorithm. Live coding is mainly used to produce music or images but it extends beyond that. Our objectives are: supporting knowledge exchange between communities, engaging with critical reflections, promoting free and open-source tools and bringing live coding to new audiences. The project, running from 10/2020 to 09/2022 and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, is led by Hangar Barcelona in collaboration with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Creative Coding Utrecht and Ljubljana’s Ljudmila.
Partners: Hangar Barcelona (ES), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (DE), Creative Coding Utrecht (NL), Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory (SI).
Associated Partner of ZKM | Karlsruhe: Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology at Karlsruhe University of Music.
