In its third edition, Adela – International Festival of Generative Arts will focus on sustainable computational art as a generative force that could support the formation of alternative models of thought and interaction between the environment, technology and humans.
The festival calls upon regenerative processuality and collective action in resistance to the dominant technocultural currents that strive for optimisation, standardisation and senseless updating on the brink of innovation and obsolescence. Engaging the principles of permacomputing, creative coding, media archaeological exploration, open-source practices and experimental electronics, it investigates the yet unrealised potentials of the divergent technological pasts while encouraging us to alter our relationships towards resources and production processes to create a sustainable technological culture. In the same breath, it calls for sustainable creativity – for artistic exploration within limits and rhythms that transcend the short-term logic of projects and the allure of novelty. At the same time, it creates space for reflecting on one’s role within their community and environment, pushing back against extractivist practices and exhausting mechanisms of cultural production.
Adela begins with “From Scratch”, an event featuring an open lineup, rooted in improvisation and insisting on applause. In Saturday’s workshop, we’ll explore creative coding between image and sound for analogue oscilloscopes. The Generative Arts Fair presents artworks that creatively employ (re)generative methods, blending new and traditional techniques. Visitors will have the opportunity to support artists by purchasing affordable pieces ideal for small-scale analogue-digital collections. The exhibition of this year’s Parameter Fair prize winner features an installation examining territorial demarcations as ephemeral data. Next comes an evening of sound and visual performances at the Algorave, live-coded by an international lineup of exceptional performers sharing their love for code and for community with the audience. This year’s Adela concludes with a new edition of Digital Dish, focusing on the history of (computerless) computing and collective knowledge production through open-source intelligence.
