Sebastian Frisch (DE) researches and creates works as an artist, musician, developer and sound-designer. He makes use of a diverse set of media technologies to create immersive experiences and discover possible connections between the digital and the palpable. His main interest belong to the fields of sound, space and interactive art. Sebastian founded his studio “Freshmania | Studio for immersive experiences” in the year 2011 to create a framework for his interdisciplinary work between Art, Science and Technology. He has presented his works at festivals, galleries and institutes like Ars Electronica Festival - Linz (AT), GOGBOT Festival - Enschede (NL), Zone2Source - Amsterdam (NL), Oddstream Festival - Nijmegen (NL), Art:Rotterdam (NL), Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (AT) and V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media - Rotterdam (NL), etc. Besides running his own studio, he supports other artists in the making of their works with the development of concepts and technologies and lectures on sound at various European universities.

Sebastian Frisch will present his project Audible Spaces focused on the presentation of human spatial hearing processes and its potential use in (headphone) computer music. The introductory lecture will start out from “the park experience”, which is the starting point of Sebastian’s current research, in which he is interested in how a park affects visitors acoustically. The core part of the lecture will address the listening of space and by playing audio excerpts from various works of artists, explanations of psychoacoustic theories, and giving a live demonstration provide answers to diverse questions. How is space used in music compositions? What are principles of human spatial sound perception? How can these principles be used in computer-music? The lecture will be followed by the presentation of the live tracking system of SPASM 4 Live, to show how the headphone space can be reconnected with the physical world.

On the following day the participants will be encouraged to generate their own sound environments with SPASM 4 Live. The used audio materials can vary from computer generated sounds, over speech and/or live instrument feeds. The content and build up of those environments depend very much on the interests and ideas of the students.

To participate on this Digital Dish you need a personal computer with preinstalled Ableton Live 9 (available here), Max 6.1.9 (available here) and headphones. Prior knowledge of the programs is not prerequisite.
