About the workshop

Nowadays, we often hear about the “cloud” as a way to describe the online services that we access daily, such as emails, social media, data storage, video-streaming, AI chat bots, etc. But what does the internet really look like behind this fog screen?

Starting from our most intimate and familiar device – the smartphone – this workshop aims to explore the material infrastructure that supports our online lives. Practically, we learn how to repurpose discarded smartphones into web servers hosting a simple webpage. This practice helps us imagine other ways of building an internet, one that places autonomy, reuse and the respect of our planetary limits as priorities.

This workshop format was initially developed by Marie Verdeil and Rein van der Woerd. The inspiration for this workshop first came from the mobile solar server developed by Rein in 2024 for composting.computer’s exhibition website at Creative Coding Utrecht
