Live coding music workshop with Mercury
Mentor: Timo Hoogland
DATE:
Friday, 6 May 2022: 5 pm - 8 pm
LOCATION:
osmo/za (8th floor), Slovenska 54, Ljubljana
APPLICATIONS: until Wednesday, 4 May: delavnica@ljudmila.org (Tine)
No prior knowledge required. The workshop is free of charge. Bring your own laptop and headphones.
About the workshop
Join this crash-course into the exciting world of live coding music. No previous knowledge of programming required, only a desire to express yourself creatively!
During this workshop you will be introduced to the live coding environment Mercury. Mercury is a minimal and human-readable language, focusing on quick expression in composition, performing and communication of live coded music. Mercury is a great environment to get introduced to the amazing worlds of live coding, creative coding, algorithmic composition, electronic music and, of course, the Algorave scene!
In this workshop you will learn how to generate different rhythms with algorithms and probabilities, play sound samples from the computer, make synthesized sounds and much more. You can change the code while it’s running and hear the changes in real time.
About the mentor
Timo Hoogland is a Dutch computational artist, live coder, musician and lecturer who codes experimental electronic dance music and develops generative audiovisual compositions, installations and performances.
As part of his Master's degree in Music Design at Utrecht University, he developed the Mercury environment to help research and development of algorithmic compositional techniques and generative visualisations for live coding performances. He is an active member of the live coding community in Utrecht, where he organises workshops, meetups and Algoraves with Creative Coding Utrecht and Netherlands Coding Live.
on-the-fly
on-the-fly is a project to promote Live Coding practice, a performative technique focused on writing algorithms in real-time so that the one who writes is part of the algorithm. Live coding is mainly used to produce music or images but it extends beyond that. Our objectives are: supporting knowledge exchange between communities, engaging with critical reflections, promoting free and open-source tools and bringing live coding to new audiences. The project, running from 10/2020 to 09/2022 and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, is led by Hangar Barcelona in collaboration with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Creative Coding Utrecht and Ljubljana’s Ljudmila.
Partners: Hangar Barcelona (ES), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (DE), Creative Coding Utrecht (NL), Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory (SI).
Associated Partner of ZKM | Karlsruhe: Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology at Karlsruhe University of Music.
