Dome for distributed perception

[[category:]]

Group development project within PIFlab, started to be built in May 2018. Join us for the third meeting on Friday, May 25th at 5pm. We already had our first two meetings on May 11 and May 18, 2018.

We welcome everyone who wants to get (or those who even already have) experience and knowledge of geodetic structures, low-cost computer clusters, automatic photogrammetry, or 3D scanning and printing for humans and animals. Working in a diverse group and on an interdisciplinary project will certainly not be mundane. We do not place restrictions, we will gladly accept everyone, every idea or an insight.

The ongoing project will be publicly presented and tested for the first time at Mini Maker Faire Ljubljana, May 26, 2018.

Instructions for use

Enter the dome where you will be photographed with dozens of cameras at a time. Based on these images, your computer will calculate a 3D color model, which could be the basis for visualizing or 3D printing of the figurine of your body.

Our goals

3D scan of humans and animals. Understanding the practical possibilities of automatic 3D photogrammetry technology. A platform for further experiments in distributed perception.

It will be possible to assemble, disassemble and relocate the dome several times with a personal vehicle.

Potek izdelave

The group work will be carried out all Friday afternoons, in May 2018.

Background and the idea in more detail

We will develop an effective platform for experiments with computer vision, light field and plenoptic function. On a prefabricated (with multiple dismantle option) structure in the shape of a dome and 3 meters high affordable units with cameras, LED lights and microcomputer RaspberryPi ZeroW will be installed on ten points. The elements will be installed into a cluster via wireless network. By doing so, these elements will be able make photo of whole-person in sync.

Such pictures are basis for 3D model reconstruction by using the automatic photogrammetry method. By using the extra high resolution cameras at the top of the dome we can also measure light reflections from different directions - anisotropy in plenoptic function, which can be useful in digitizing cultural heritage, for example. With the ability to film in sync, we gather a lot of motion data at one time, which can also create 3D 'bullet time' effects in the style of the movie Matrix.

With the dome, we follow several freely and openly available projects of similar structures and the similar modes of use, as well as the work of Paul Debevc at UC Berkeley. The 3D scanner has a practical and attractive value for the whole body figure, also in dynmamic poses. Comined with other 3D technologies, we can use the gathered date to build physical or visual models of people and other objects of similar sizes.

As a basis for further experimentation in distributed computer perception, the project has a potential for growth and to expand its possible uses even further by developing communities that will build it. Each developed software in the design structures of computer units (strawberries) will be published online under a open and free licence.
