About the event

Live coding, as one of the youngest artistic disciplines, is only beginning to position itself as an exploratory and creative field. In the framework of the on-the-fly series, Ljudmila and its European partners are gathering creators and researchers to facilitate a field of activities for this genre also in Slovenia. Currently, parallel research on live coding audiences is being carried out in four countries. In this discussion, we will present our first findings. Giovanni Mori from Italy, one of the pioneers of live coding research, is among the invited speakers.

Keynote lecture: “Live coding? What does it mean?”
In his recently published book Live coding? What does it mean? Mori explores live coding as a performance technique from different perspectives. In his book, he presents the history of the live coding movement and its internal dynamics. The author will present the main highlights of his work on live coding and also discuss the challenges.

Panel discussion:

Nina Dragičević & Tjaša Pureber: Live coding audience development reserach in Slovenia, with Lluís Nacenta from Hangar Barcelona (ES) and Valerie W from Creative Coding Utrecht (NL) with presentations of related audience development researches in partner EU countries.

Giovanni Mori holds a PhD in History of the Performing Arts from the University of Florence. He pursued ethnographic research on the live coding community in the UK. He has also worked on the Sonic Pi project in the live coding community. Mori is currently working with the Tempo Reale Institute on research in music and on developing the use of live coding in teaching children programming languages.

Nina Dragičević is a writer, composer and holds a PhD in Sociology. Dragičević is the author of Kdo ima druge skrbi ( 2014), Slavne neznane (2016), Med njima je glasba, (2017), and Ljubav reče greva (2019), as well as the electroacoustic albums Parallellax (2016) and Gospa, tega v realnosti ni (2019). Dragičević is the artistic director of the international festival Sound Topographies and the author of the programme Slavne neznane on Radio Študent. In 2020 she was bestowed with the Župančič Award, in 2019 she was a finalist for the Jenko Award and the Veronika Award, in 2018 she was awarded the Knight of Poetry Award (jury and audience award), and with the University of Ljubljana's Gala Charter for Outstanding Achievements. She was also a finalist in the Palma Ars Acustica (EBU) competition.

Tjaša Pureber is a political scientist. She has worked for several years as an advocacy manager and as the head expert of Asociacija, the NGO network of the self-employed in culture. She was/is a member of expert commissions at the Ministry of Culture and the City of Ljubljana. She is a former journalist and works as self-employed in culture. She works as a producer and communication staff in the field of performing arts. She is responsible for PR at Theatre Glej. She is also an independent researcher and a publicist. Her main areas of research are social movements and cultural policies.

Valerie Wollinger from Creative Coding Utrecht is assisting the On-The-Fly team with mapping out live coders in Europe. As a newcomer to the field, Valerie is interested to explore common motivations and to underlay dynamics that drive individuals to visit live coding events.

Lluís Nacenta is a professor, writer and curator in the fields of music and contemporary art. Degree in Mathematics and Music (piano), Master’s Degree in Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Philosophy and Doctor of Humanities, with a PhD thesis about musical repetition, his research proposes a philosophical perspective on the sonic arts. He has published numerous articles in digital and paper publications, such as Cultura/s de La Vanguardia and Nativa, and has curated exhibitions and concerts for Sónar+D, Arts Santa Mònica, Centre de Cultura Contemporància de Barcelona (CCCB) and Fundació Antoni Tàpies, among others.

on-the-fly

on-the-fly is a project to promote Live Coding practice, a performative technique focused on writing algorithms in real-time so that the one who writes is part of the algorithm. Live coding is mainly used to produce music or images but it extends beyond that. Our objectives are: supporting knowledge exchange between communities, engaging with critical reflections, promoting free and open-source tools and bringing live coding to new audiences. The project, running from 10/2020 to 09/2022 and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, is led by Hangar Barcelona in collaboration with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Creative Coding Utrecht and Ljubljana’s Ljudmila.

Partners: Hangar Barcelona (ES), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (DE), Creative Coding Utrecht (NL), Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory (SI). Associated Partner of ZKM | Karlsruhe: Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology at Karlsruhe University of Music.
